09.08.15 Gold Bluffs Beach and Fern Canyon in California

o2 (Medium)Tuesday, September 8, 2015 – Roy learned that parts of Jurassic Park 2 were filmed in Fern Canyon, an area south of here so off we went in that direction on Sunday afternoon.

We entered the park and then drove down a six mile gravel, bumpy, winding, dusty road to a big parking lot from which you can either go into Fern Canyon or go in a different direction and go to the ocean on Gold Bluffs Beach.  Both of these are within Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.  We’ve learned that the Redwoods are not just in one location, but are all along the coast in various Forests, National and State Parks.

There was no room in the parking lot for Boots so we parked along the side of the dusty road about a quarter mile from the parking lot.  On our way there we saw the sign above that we were entering a Tsunami Hazard Zone…..

o1 (Medium) o3 (Medium)Here’s a description from the internet of Fern Canyon:  Imagine walking through a narrow canyon where the walls are completely covered by luxuriant ferns and mosses and are dripping with moisture.

That describes Fern Canyon, an unforgettable natural wonder that Steven Spielberg chose as a location for Jurassic Park 2: The Lost World.

This level trail of about one mile follows Home Creek as it courses through the forest. This modest stream has over the eons carved a deep (50 to 80 feet) canyon through the sedimentary soils. The vertical walls sprout an amazing variety of ferns (five different kinds) and other moisture-loving plants and mosses. Depending on the time of year, there is a constant drip-drip of water trickling down the canyon walls.

During summer months, foot bridges are installed over the creek to make this trail easier (and dryer), but it is generally passable year-round if one is nimble and can tolerate getting damp. o5 (Medium) o8 (Medium) o9 (Medium) o10 (Medium) o11rc fc 2rosie fc 1 o12 (Medium) o13 (Medium)On to Gold Bluff Beach!  It’s quite a trek to get to the sand and then another trek to the ocean.  Roy’s knee was hurting so he waited for me sitting on a big log in the sand, while I went to the ocean to play. oi beach 1 (Medium)o beach 2 (Medium) o beach 3 (Medium) o beach 5 (Medium)rc fc 4 rc gbb1 o beach roy (Medium)A panoramic picture of the beach and the path to the beach from where we parked.  I slipped off a log I was walking across (you can see it on the walkway) into a bunch of wet mud on the way back which was lots of fun!!!  Click on the panoramic picture to see it bigger!o beach panoramic (Medium)We’re resting today (Monday) enjoying eating watermelon, homemade gumbo and listening to some Gospel music!  Tomorrow we’ll be back top laying and hiking when we visit Trees of Mystery down the road a bit!

09.07.15 Happy Labor Day Weekend from the Chauvins in California!!

11987127_998551780189996_8354343308897750363_nMonday, September 7, 2015 – After working a couple of hours Saturday morning we drove up the California coast and enjoyed stopping at several places to roam through the redwoods and gawk at the ocean.  We went into the ocean to got our feetsies wet and looked down on the ocean from many heights along the way!  Even came across a cemetery high up on a mountain overlooking the ocean!

Here’s some of the sights we saw today!  They are in the order in which we saw the sights.  Redwood forest and ocean beaches kind of mingle as the pictures will show.

The next two are by a lagoon that looked like it could be in Louisiana except not with the mountains around it!x 5 - Copy (Medium) x 6 - Copy (Medium) x1 - Copy (Medium)This is a well worth pathway I hiked down to get closer to the ocean.  Quite a hike back up the hill but I made it!x2 - Copy (Medium)When you get down near the end of the pictures there are a couple of a view from up high where a small cemetery is located.  This view is from the opposite side of the water.  On the left at the top here is the Klamath River which is emptying into the Pacific Ocean on the bottom right. x3 - Copy (Medium) X6 - Copy (Medium) x7 - Copy (Medium) X7 (2) - Copy (Medium)rc1 rc2 x8 - Copy (Medium) x9 - Copy (Medium) X10 - Copy (Medium) X11 - Copy (Medium) X13 - Copy (Medium) X14 - Copy (Medium) X15 - Copy (Medium) X16 - Copy (Medium) X17 - Copy (Medium)This was taken from down within the redwoods looking up at Boots patiently waiting for us to return!!X18 - Copy (Medium) X18 (2) - Copy (Medium)rc3 X19 - Copy (Medium)Back at the ocean at Coastal Trail which goes along the coast for many miles. 09.05.15 – Say HELLO to the Pacific Ocean!!

Map of the state we have visited as of September 6, 2015!!

Saturday, September 5, 2015 – I have to say this upfront.  If it wasn’t for missing Madisyn and Chip I would stay in California.  There is just too much beauty to ever want to willingly leave this place!!  If there was someway to convert what our eyes are seeing immediately to a blog post I’d jump all over that!!!

We drove through more Redwoods in the Del Norte Coast Redwoods State Park.  Giant, beautiful trees around every curve.  And lots of curves there are.  I don’t know how Roy does it in this big bus with Boots behind us.   But he does!

We will go back to drive through them in our truck when we can take pictures to share!!

When we started seeing the Pacific Ocean out our windows I wanted to jump up and down with joy.  What a magnificent sight!  The drive from Crescent City to Klamath should have taken us 30 minutes but it took over 2 hours with all the stops we made to oooh and aaaah!!

The following are pictures and a video we took on our short drive here!

We’ve arrived at Kamp Klamath RV Resort.  We’ve never had a problem getting a 50 amp spot but we are right now. They only have 30 amps here so we’ll see how we do with that. The temperature is cool so we really don’t need the air conditioner and I think everything else runs fine.  We’ll see!  Tomorrow night we’re attending a big BBQ cookout here for the Labor Day Weekend and I work during the day tomorrow but just for three hours.  We’re going back to the ocean and through the redwoods during the middle of the day to do more ooo0hing and aaaahhing!!

kk (Medium) kk chickens (Medium)I thought the sign above was just a cute Chicken Xing sign but when we d Dora into our site, a chicken ran out of no where and hid under Dora!!! We walked through the park this evening and found the chicken coop which is a converted pop up trailer – how appropriate!!!20150chickens904_181446 chicken coopWe Skyped with Madisyn and Chip this evening and that is always a special time!  I hope each of you has a very special Labor Day weekend!
